Created to complement Wella's current hair color offerings, Illumina's range of 35 shades was years in the making. It may be used with any developer and introduces MICROLIGHT technology, where micro-particles encapsulate metals left on hair to protect the cuticle and maintain clarity.

The outer layer of the hair, the cuticle, is naturally transparent, like clear glass, so its condition is extremely important—it allows light to pass through and reflect the real color tones of the hair from within. Impurities like tiny metals from water can stick to the cuticles and form free radicals during coloring, which damages the cuticle surface. Once the cuticle is no longer transparent, light gets diffused instead of reflecting with the same intensity—less luminosity, color after color.
Illumina's MICROLIGHT technology uses millions of micro-particles that encapsulate those metals, reducing cuticle damage and keeping the surface healthier and more transparent. The result: incredible light reflection plus up to 100% grey coverage with a sheer color result.
Just as with cosmetics, people who color their hair often fall into two groups. Some go for a saturated, full-on color approach—strong foundation, block hair color, a very "done" result.
