Tips For Finding A New Salon
Tips For Choosing A Hair Color You’ll Love
So, you have an appointment for a new style. How can you prepare for a successful salon visit? Here are some tips for making sure you get the results you want from your stylist.
Bring in Photos
It is important to bring photos of what you like. Some of our guests are almost apologetic about bringing pictures, but it’s the best way to express what look your going for. You don’t need to find the exact haircut you want, just find features of cuts you like. You can bring in pictures of the bangs you like, how you like the back to look, how the sides should flow. Any good stylist can blend together features you like.
Avoid using hair jargon
The terms one stylist uses may mean something different to another. Try to be clear with what you are looking for, more fullness, straighter or curlier, off the collar or exposing ears. Your stylist will reiterate what the cut and end result will be.
Beware of the “Grow Out” Stylist
You show up excited for a new cut. You have done your homework and brought in pictures. Your stylist then suggests, the noncommittal “lets grow your hair out”. This can be a sign your stylist is not confident in their ability to achieve the cut you are looking for.
Lack of training is more common than you think in the salon industry. Many stylist stand behind the chair with fear you may want a cut they don’t know how to do. Of course your stylist should tell you if they feel a cut will not work for your hair. The average person would like the opposite of what hair they actually have. If you have straight, you think curly would be so much easier to manage, and vice versa. In these cases your stylist should point out the extra work it may be.
Does your stylist need to see your hair dry?
In my, not so humble opinion, no. This is a controversial subject with most of my colleagues as they disagree with me. Seeing you before the shampoo tells me how you styled your hair and nothing more. Most people change the natural texture of their hair when they style, curly hair people tend to flat iron, straight hair is curled. But when your hair has been shampooed and wet, your natural hair with its wave, texture, and growth patterns show. The shape of you head, hairline, and bone structure all play a role in deciding how a haircut should be carried out and wet hair shows the nature of your hair.
